About UsBarb's Southern Style Gourmet Brittles by Alita Terry An old-fashioned treat has a modern flare at Barb's Southern Style Gourmet Brittles. Positioned around the perimeter of Lake Ella Park, Barb's cozy cobblestone cottage personifies southern charm, making it a signature treasure to the Tallahassee area. The mom and pop owned shop has literally gone "nuts," taking brittle recipes to a pleasant extreme. The candies are placed into three categories, but everything starts with the original peanut brittle. In the "Nut Lovers" section hardcore brittle fans indulge in flavors such as pecan coconut, macadamia, and pistachio brittles. The "Chocolate Lovers" section offers the original brittles drizzled in seven varieties of chocolate. Flavors range from a sensual dark chocolate almond to a tasty strawberry chocolate cashew. Barb's even includes a line of "No-nutter" brittles, where the anti-nut can enjoy sunflower, pumpkin seed, and trail mix brittles. In addition to assorted candied treats, Barb's offers homemade ice creams. Each ice cream features a particular brittle. The Virginilla, Banana Nut, and Chocolate Ultimate Nut Lover are just some of the flavors waiting to grace the taste buds. Barb's brittles and ice cream make unique gift items at an affordable cost, and because all brittles are made with low sugar they satisfy both those with a sweet tooth and health conscious diet. With over 25 varieties of homemade brittles and ice creams, Barb's has something for everyone. Barb's Brittles is open Wednesday thru Saturday 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Barb's Southern Style Gourmet Brittles History Barb's Brittles was started over four years ago with a simple mission: to get rid of some extra peanuts by selling brittle at a local craft fair. After purchasing over 100 lbs of peanuts to make Christmas gifts for family members, Barb realized she had "bit off more than she could chew". Not one to waste anything(and determined not to her the doubtful snickers of her husband) Barb was on a mission to get rid of the nuts. Needless to say Barbara McGarrah merged into the brittle business. Today she is the proud owner of Barb's southern Style Gourmet Brittles. However the Florida State Graduate, with a degree in fashion design, had a natural curiosity to see just how many "styles" of brittle she could create from her original recipe……Let's just say poor Barb stopped counting after her 25th variety! Although Barb started fashioning brittles using nuts, she soon started designing her own line of Chocolate Lovers Brittles. To add to her selection she, then, began using seeds, namely sunflower and pumpkin. One day Barb was at a loss for what to create with her original recipe. Finally she decided why not add nothing-hence "virgin" brittle was born and she is proud to say "It has never been touched by a nut." When Barb moved into her storefront location, she wanted a unique way to introduce her brittles. After brainstorming, Barb decided ice cream would be the solution. Each of her homemade ice creams features the original or flavored chocolate brittles (white, dark, peppermint, spearmint, strawberry, orange, and lemon chocolates). Ice cream flavors include (but are not limited to) Strawberry Chocolates Pecan, Banana Nut, Hot Chocolate (Featuring Spicy Brittle), Whatever, and for those who don't care for nuts - Virginnelle. Four years later, Barb is still trying to get rid of her nuts, but today she has expanded her mission. That mission is for Barb's Brittles to be tasted by as many people as possible and for it to be the BEST brittle their taste buds ever touched. |
